Parental Care Nursery and Primary School in Bushenyi has emerged as the overall winner of the Western Regional Enjuba Spelling Bee competition, outperforming several schools to claim top honours.
The competition was held at St. Mukasa Preparatory Seminary in Mushanga, Sheema District, under the theme, "See the World Differently." It attracted pupils from a number of primary schools across the Western Region.
The contest featured two categories: the Junior category for Primary One to Primary Four pupils and the Senior category for Primary Five to Primary Seven learners.
Speaking after the competition, the Headteacher of Parental Care Nursery and Primary School, Desmond Tayebwa, attributed the school's success to the hard work and commitment of its pupils, teachers and parents.
"We are privileged to be crowned champions. I would like to thank the pupils, teachers and parents of Parental Care Nursery and Primary School, Bushenyi, for a job well done," Tayebwa said.
He explained that the school's outstanding performance saw several of its pupils qualify for the national finals of the Enjuba Spelling Bee.
According to Tayebwa, the top five contestants in the Junior category and the top ten contestants in the Senior category will represent the Western Region at the national Enjuba Spelling Bee competition.
He noted that the achievement reflects the school's continued commitment to excellence in academics, discipline, sports and other co-curricular activities.
"We thank God for this achievement. Parental Care Nursery and Primary School is among the best schools in the country in academics, discipline, sports and many other areas," he added.
The Rector of St. Mukasa Preparatory Seminary, Rev. Fr. Allan Gumisiriza, commended the pupils for their impressive spelling abilities and applauded the judges for conducting a fair and transparent competition.
He encouraged more schools and parents to embrace spelling competitions, saying they enhance academic performance, build learners' confidence and provide opportunities for pupils to interact and learn from one another.
"We believe such engagements provide an opportunity for pupils to interact, learn and grow together. I encourage more schools to join the Enjuba Spelling Bee because it greatly benefits learners," Rev. Fr. Gumisiriza said.
Schools that participated in the competition included Parental Care Nursery and Primary School Bushenyi, Little Stars Primary School Kizinda, St. Mukasa Preparatory Seminary, Kyanyakatura Primary School, Uganda Martyrs Primary School Mbarara, among others.
